The mechanical oscillator has an oscillation body (106,114) which is excited to provide a required oscillation movement and a device (125), e.g. a mechanical stop, for limiting the oscillation amplitude of the oscillation body to a value which is less than a maximum oscillation amplitude obtained when the oscillation frequency corresponds to the resonance frequency. An Independent claim for a method of generating oscillation of a mechanical oscillator is also included.
