<p>A transfer/injection molding apparatus (500) and process is defined that includes a charge forming unit (502). The charge (538) is formed so that the fibers therein are randomly oriented in substantially parallel horizontal planes such that they are always substantially parallel to the direction of initial flow into the cavity (289) of the molding unit (504). The charge forming unit (502) includes a cutter (534) for cutting sheet material into strips and a wind-up fork (536) for rolling the strips into wrapped charges (538). The wrapped charges (538) are formed by winding the strips around prongs (537) extending from the wind-up fork (536). Further, the fork (536) is attached to a robotic arm (541) which loads the wrapped charge (538) into the molding unit (504).</p> |
