The silk fabric is stabilized for painting by attaching a backing of adhesive coated nonwoven or synthetic fabric with a hot iron. The backing can be removed after painting or it can remain attached as part of the final composite fabric. Alternatively, backings with adhesive on both sides can be used to build up more elaborate composites. An Independent claim is included for using a painting pattern as the backing so that the outlines show through. The pattern is removed after painting.
