A new gene, named Pactolus, and its encoded protein are disclosed. The gene and protein show homology to the β integrins. Pactolus is a protein on the cell surface which is involved in holding immature blood cells within the bone marrow by binding to a ligand. Differential splicing of the mRNA yields two forms of Pactolus - a longer membrane bound form and a truncated form. The administration of Pactolus or of a ligand which binds to Pactolus will result in immature blood cells being released from the bone marrow to the bloodstream where they may be easily collected.
|
