The present invention relates to a beam shaper and to an apparatus for reading from and/or writing to optical storage media using in such a beam shaper. According to the invention, a beam shaper for generating a first shaped light beam from an incoming light beam has a beam shaping element with an optical property that varies spatially over the profile of the incoming light beam.
