The seat belt is wound around a reel which is spring biassed to pull the belt in, but lightly enough to allow its withdrawal by the user. When the inertia of the user, during an accident or sudden braking, causes the belt to become tensioned, it is locked to prevent further withdrawal by a pawl (11), which operates against a toothed wheel (9) on the belt reel end. The pawl is normally biassed away from the wheel by a light spring (13), but is pulled into wheel contact by direction the belt over a jockey pulley on the other end of the pivoted pawl. The pawl can be situated on either the inner or outer run of the belt entering the reel.
