Rod or wire with variable diameter conical sections is surface heat treated in an induction heating device made up of several induction coils (5) spaced apart at a distance (L) which corresponds to the length of biconical section(4). The length of the coil (1) is equal to the sum of the length of a cylindrical section (1) with the smallest diameter (d1) and approx. half the length of the adjacent transitional conical section(2).
