PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for oxidizing an alkyl compound and an aromatic compound, capable of ensuring saving and improvement of time/efficiency. SOLUTION: In this oxidative reaction method of an aromatic compound and an alkyl aromatic compound using cerium(IV)ion, the aromatic and the alkyl aromatic compound are dissolved, preferably at 0.1 to 3.0 molar concentration in a 5-15C alkane, preferably hexane or n-heptane or n-decane or cyclohexane and a carbonyl-containing product produced by reaction is higher than minimum solubility thereof in alkane or smaller than maximum solubility of aromatic compound or alkyl aromatic compound. The resultant product is highly pure and related by-product is decreased and chemical yield is substantially improved.
