PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hydrophilic carbon material having high endurance of its hydrophilic property by uniformly and more tightly sticking a hydrophilic property imparting agent such as silica to a carbon material. SOLUTION: A soln. prepd. by dissolving metasilicic acid or a metasilicate in an org. solvent such as methanol, ethanol or acetone or in an aq. soln. of the org. solvent so as to attain 2-20% concn. or an aq. soln. is impregnated into a carbon material under pressure or the carbon material is immersed in the soln. optionally under reduced pressure. The carbon material is then dried in air and heat-treated at 500-1,000 deg.C in an inert atmosphere to stick fine silica particles of <=1 μm particle diameter to the surface of the carbon material or to the surface and to the pores in the carbon material. |
