PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition having a wide driving temperature range, exhibiting quick response by the lowering of viscosity especially at a low-temperature region and enabling the simultaneous development of a sufficiently large negative dielectric anisotropy suitable forτ-Vmin mode and a smectic A phase having a sufficient temperature range to realize good orientation by compounding a new component to a known liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: This composition contains at least one kind each of the compounds of formulas I to IV (R1 to R4 are each a l-8C alkyl or alkoxy; X is H or F; R, is a 1-12C alkyl or alkoxy; R6 is a 1-12C alkyl; R7 and R8 are each a 1-9C alkyl; the ring A is benzene ring or cyclohexane ring). Preferably, the composition contains 1-20 wt.% of a compound of formula I, 10-40 wt.% of a compound of formula II, 10-50 wt.% of a compound of formula III and 35-50 wt.% of a compound of formula IV. Compounds other than the compounds of formulas I to IV may be added to the composition at a concentration of <=30 wt.% based on the whole composition. The compound is preferably a smectic liquid crystal compound.
