PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve control responsibility by a method in which the size of a statistical error of a film thickness meter, a film thickness, and the relation-ship of the time constant of the film thickness meter are obtained, the time constant of the film thickness meter is obtained corresponding to an aimed precision, a line speed is decreased when the constant is greater than a transfer time, and a sampling frequency is increased than the transfer time. SOLUTION: An extremely thick film and radiation strengths V,V during uncoating are obtained on line. A standard value is obtained, and the initial values TMS, TDS, TS of the time constant, a transfer time, and a sampling frequency are set, respectively. The standard valueσts of a film thickness precision in a film thickness (t) is obtained when the film thickness (t) is given. When the required precision 't of the film thickness of a steel plate is severer than the standard valueσts , the time constant T of the film thickness meter is increased, and a statistical errorσt is decreased. When the obtained time constant Tm exceeds the transfer time TD, a line speed S is decreased, and the transfer time T is extended. When the obtained transfer time TD is greater than the sampling frequency T, the sampling frequency is made greater than the transfer time TD.
