PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous dispersion capable of developing excellent ink receptivity, water resistance, etc., useful as a coating material for ink jet recording by adding a polymer obtained by polymerizing a specific monomer component in an aqueous medium. SOLUTION: This aqueous dispersion comprises a polymer obtained by polymerizing (A) 100 pts.wt. of a radically polymerizable monomer component in the presence of (B) 5-50 pts.wt. of a hydroxyl group-containing water-soluble polymer. The component A preferably contains an N-alkyl(meth)acrylamide. The component A may contain an ethylenic unsaturated monomer containing a carbonyl group based on an aldo group or a keto group. In the case in which the component A contains an ethylenic unsaturated monomer containing a carbonyl group, preferably the component A comprises a polyfunctional hydrazine derivative containing at least two hydrazino groups in one molecule. Preferably the obtained polymer has >=-20 deg.C glass transition temperature.
