PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject steel cord capable of preventing tire cut troubles due to its breakage even if tire sidewall is subjected to impact force, and to obtain a pneumatic radial tire with the above steel cord applied to the carcass ply. SOLUTION: This steel cord for reinforcing rubber articles has the central basic structure consisting of 1-3 steel filaments and two-layer stranded structure composed of coaxial outermost layer consisting of 5-9 steel filaments and wrapped filaments wrapped in the direction opposite to the coaxial outermost layer, wherein the filament diameter D1 in the coaxial outermost layer and the diameter D2 of the wrapped filaments satisfy the relationship: D1×0.7>=D2.
