PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of recovering a desired optical isomer in a high yield and resultingly producing the racemate of 3-quinuclidinol useful as a pharmaceutical, agrochemical or the like by bringing an optically active 3-quinuclidinol into contact with a catalytic reduction catalyst under conditions in which a recemate is producible. SOLUTION: An optically active 3-quinuclidinol is brought into contact with a catalytic reduction catalyst of a Raney catalyst selected from a group consisting of Raney nickel, Raney cobalt and Raney copper, or the like in hydrogen atmosphere under conditions in which a racemate of 3-quinuclidinol is preferentially produced, and the obtained racemate is recovered to obtain the racemate of 3-quinuclidinol. Further, it is preferable that an optically active 3-quinuclidinol is made to contact with the first catalytic reduction catalyst under oxidative conditions, and the obtained 3-quinuclidinone is brought into contact with the second catalytic reduction catalyst under reductive conditions, with the result that the optically active 3-quinuclidinol of the formula is racemized. |
