An NMR system comprises a high temperature superconductor magnet (17) which is cooled within a vacuum insulated container (16). NMR equipment comprises a vacuum insulated container (16) surrounding a high temperature superconductor material (17) and an associated cooling unit (18), a magnetizing coil (19) for producing a magnetic field for magnetizing the high temperature superconductor material (17), a space for placing a test subject (11) in a magnetic field created by the high temperature superconductor material (17), and a detector coil (12) for detecting NMR signals produced by the subject. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating the above NMR equipment. Preferred Features: The superconductive phase of the high temperature superconductor material (17) is an oxide of formula RE-Ba-Cu-O with an RE : Ba : Cu molar ratio of 1 : 2 : 3 and a critical temperature of 90-96 K.
