The invention relates to a method and a device for eliminating or reducing the ammonium content in waste waters, especially in waste waters from composting or biogas plants, wherein the waste water undergoes a reverse osmosis process. A permeate in the form of highly pure water and a retentate with the salts and other large molecules contained in the waste water is obtained in highly concentrated form from said reverse osmosis process. The retentate is subsequently liberated from the ammonium.
