Viscous fluid heat generator for motor vehicle air conditioning system

The heat generator has a housing (1) containing a heat generation chamber (3) and an adjacent heat extraction chamber (30). A drive shaft (6) supported by a bearing (5) and seal drives a rotor element (7) in the heat generation chamber. A viscous fluid (35) is accommodated in a gap between the heat generation chamber wall and an outer surface of the rotor element to generate heat in response to the application of a shear effect by the rotor. A storage chamber which enables the application of the shear effect to be prevented has two storage regions (32,34) and a device for controlling the flow of fluid between them.
