Ground material is placed in a mold to be stamped down forming compressed cakes or briquettes. Stamping units are individually driven by Laithwaite linear electromagnetic motors. Their primary and secondary sections (1.10, 1.11) are electromagnetically coupled. Stamping units are driven synchronously or asynchronously. An Independent claim is included for corresponding the equipment, in which each stamp rod has at least one primary drive section. Preferred Features: Each secondary section is mounted directly on the moving stamp rod, for electromagnetic coupling with its primary sections. Between primaries, guidance- and spacing rollers (1.5), locate the secondaries. The inner guide frame (1.8) with the linear drive primary, is fastened to the machine frame (1.12) through horizontal resilient mountings acting perpendicular to the stamping rod. Stamping rods are held in their starting positions by a transverse bolting arrangement. Stamping units are suspended interchangeably on the machine frame (4) or the building structure. The inner guide frame has a containment (1.9) with brushes for swept sealing. All, or individual primaries of a stamping unit are fed via supply lines from one or more frequency converters. Just before the stamping rod impacts the material being compressed, primary and secondary sections are electromagnetically decoupled, using a ramped control signal. Rod movement is measured incrementally or absolutely, the signal obtained being processed to control its lift. At impact, rod acceleration is measured, to control its kinetic energy at this point, and to control compression of the cake.
