The method involves detecting the variation of a signal, which is dependent on engine rotation, under certain operating conditions. The cylinder number is determined, using a cylinder detector (150), from the frequency at which a certain value of the signal is reached between two occurrences of a preferred signal. The process is conducted at or before the first starting of the engine. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for detecting the cylinder number in an internal combustion engine.
