The authentication or release signal is passed from the release control (46) to the function component (48) to allow the apparatus (10) to work. If there is no match, the apparatus (10) cannot function. The identification visible to the human eye is a marking symbol. The data label (18) has a field where only machine-readable data are held and a second field with the symbol for human reading. The data label (18) has at least one reference mark, for the orientation of the scanner. The machine-readable section of the label (18) has a number of lines of a binary pixel code, containing only machine-readable data. The other field has a number of lines of a pixel code which are readable by humans and by machine. A machine-readable dividing line is between the two data fields on the label (18). The reference mark is a frame round the data fields. The binary pixel code has a line of a row of adjacent bit markings, for the binary presentation of an information unit. Each line has an additional binary bit marking as a check for the binary presentation of a section of the data. An Independent claim is included for the process of identification and authentication where the data are captured from the label, compared with stored data, and the apparatus is released for working on a match.
