The bore drilling machine has a rotary drive for rotation of the drilling tool and a displacement drive for moving it to and from the workpiece, in accordance with a control and regulation function (36). The function compares the actual tool loading (LI) with a required loading (LSS) for controlled movement of the tool between a reference point defined by initial contact with the workpiece and a point corresponding to the required penetration depth. An Independent claim for a method for drilling bores in a workpiece is also included.
