A cable holder for a hanging lamp which has a lamp body (9) and a cable (11) for hanging the lamp body from a suspension device on a ceiling (13) or similar, has the cable guided twice between the suspension device and the lamp body. There is a re-routing device to reverse the cable direction between the cable ends so that two part-lengths are formed, separated by the cable holder (15). The re-routing device has a device for frictional locking of the cable by loading the cable ends. There is a cable guide device (21-29) for fixing the course of the cable in the cable holder that has one or more edges (23,25) over which the cable can be re- routed
