The passenger lift (100) has a shaft with an electric motor assembly (3) to one side near the top of the shaft. It has a drive drum (4) round which the cable (40) may be looped. The cable is attached to the lift cage (22) and passes over a first top sheave (31.1), then passes down and under the drive drum before looping up and over a second sheave (31.2) and its other end is attached to a counterweight (400). The sheaves and the motor drive assembly are attached to vertical frame members (15.1-3).
