At least the gas generators(1) which are in functional communication with the airbags located in the front area of the passenger saloon are installed in the central transverse support member(5). The gas generators are each connected by a gas pipe section(6-8) to the diffusor(2,13) of the corresponding airbag housing. The transverse support member has gas outlet passages to the respective gas pipe sections. The gas generators are each installed in the transverse member in a container which has gas outlets corresponding to the gas outlet passages in the transverse support member.
