The ceramic duct is in a number of sections (2, 4, 6), each with radial projections (12, 16) on its ends. The projections on adjacent duct sections are joined together with ceramic seal rings (8) between them and locking collars (10). Each locking collar is made up of two semicircular V-section components connected by a pivot (18) on one side and a bolt (22) through lugs (20) on the other. The seal rings can be of a malleable ceramic or refractory fabric, and in a variant of the design the surfaces of the collars and seal rings can have matching annular projections and recesses.
