PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means readily usable by an amateur for the prophylaxis of dental caries and periodontosis and having persistence in the prophylactic effects thereof and further a means capable of readily and effectively treating the periodontosis by the amateur. SOLUTION: This composition for coating teeth contains shellac dissolved in an alcohol, an antimicrobial ingredient selected from the group consisting of a quaternary ammonium salt-based germicide, a fluorine-based germicide, a bisbiguanide derivative-based germicide, a phenolic germicide and an amphoteric surfactant-based germicide and/or a pharmacodynamically effective ingredient selected from the group consisting of tranexamic acid, allantoin, allantoin dihydroxyaluminum, allantoin chlorohydroxyaluminum,ε-aminocaproic acid, lysozyme, sodium chloride, azulene, dl-α-tocopherol acetate, dl-α-tocopherol nicotinate, epidihydrocholesterol, dihydroxycholesterol, an extract of Phellodendri Cortex, zinc citrate, Gantrez acid, catechin,β-glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid.
