PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new display mode capable of solving both of the darkness of the display of a liquid crystal device using two polarizing plates and the degradation of the visibility of the liquid crystal device using a scattering mode in a reflection type liquid crystal device. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal layer 30 of a high-molecular distributed type, by controlling the alignment angle (ϕ), a twist angle (θ) and retardation (Δn.d), when the liquid crystal layer 30 is in a light transmission state, linearly polarized light P passed through the polarizing plate 40 and made incident on the liquid crystal layer 30 is passed through the liquid crystal layer 30 and becomes almost circularly polarized light C on the surface of a reflection electrode 21. When the circularly polarized light C is reflected on the reflection surface of the reflection electrode 21 and then passed through the liquid crystal layer 30 again, it becomes the linearly polarized light A provided with a polarization direction almost orthogonal to the initial linearly polarized light P. The linearly polarized light A can not be transmitted through the polarizing plate 40. |
