PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To additionally protect the shoulder area of a passenger by providing an air bag deploying element having at least one hose which becomes shorter at expansion. SOLUTION: An element 12 for deploying a folded air bag 10 is provided with two hoses 14, 16. In the event of a side impact, the side impact is detected by a sensor, then a gas generator 26 is activated. This causes the air to flow in a hose section 20 of the air bag 10. Accordingly, the hose section 20 expands, causing the hoses 14, 16 to expand, and the hoses become shorter. Because the outer end portions of the hoses 14, 16 are fixed to the vehicle, the entire safety device is stretched between these outer ends, and the safety device is pulled outside a housing. At the same time, gas flows into a main region 22 of the air bag and expands the main region.
