PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a dense sintered compact of a ferroelectric oxide for a target, having excellent surface smoothness and a uniform chemical composition when observed microscopically. SOLUTION: This dense sintered compact of a ferroelectric oxide has a chemical composition of the formula; (Bi2 O2 )(Mn-1 Rn O3n+1 ) ((n) is a value selected from 2, 3 and 4; M is at least one kind of metal ion selected from the group consisting of Bi<3+> , La<3+> , Ba<2+> , Sr<2+> and K<+> ; R is at least one kind of metal non selected from the group consisting of Ti<4+> , Nb<5+> and Ta<5+> ). The particle diameters of crystal particles constituting the sintered compact are <=5μm, the chemical composition of each crystal particle is uniform and the bulk density of each crystal particle is >=80 % of the theoretical density.
