摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a supertwist liq. crystal display which exhibits a short response time, a high steepness of characteristic curve, and a good angle dependence of contrast by using a mixture of specific liq. crystal components. SOLUTION: This supertwist liq. crystal display uses a liq. crystal mixture comprising 5-90 wt.% liq. crystal component (A) having a dielectric anisotropy of±1.5 or higher, 10-80 wt.% liq. crystal component (B) having a dielectric anisotropy of -1,5 to +1.5, 0-20 wt.% liq, crystal component (D) having a dielectric anisotropy of -1.5 or lower, and an optically active component (C) in such an ant. that the ratio between the thickness of the layer and the natural pitch of a chiral nematic liq. crystal mixture is about 0.2-1.3. Component A contains a compd. of formula I (wherein R<a> is 1-12C alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl, or alkenyloxy; R<2> is 1-5C alkyl or alkoxy; Z is -COO-, -CH2 CH2 -, or a single bond; and the group of formula II is a group of formula I or IV), and component B contains a compd. of formula V (wherein R<3> is 2-7C alkenyl; R<4> is the same as R<a> in formula I; and c is 0 or 1).
