The hybrid drive has an internal combustion engine (12) which drives an input shaft (2) for a gearbox (16) via a clutch (34). An electric motor (41) drives a second input shaft for the gearbox via a coupling (36). The vehicle can be driven by the engine and motor independently or together. The electric motor is speeded up to synchronise speeds with gearbox input shaft prior to connection to it by the coupling.
