Application of a coating mass of resin and an abrasive material to the surface of a moving paper web comprises passing the web (1) round a deflection roller (2) where it meets an applicator roller (6) aligned parallel to the deflection roller axis in a narrow gap from the paper web with a synchronized or closely synchronized rotation between the rollers (2,6). A slit jet (7) delivers the coating mass either directly to the surface of the paper web (1) or the applicator roller (6). A doctor, with generally rectangular cloths (9) of a flexible and rubber-type material, is mounted to a holding bar (8) so that their free ends are drawn away by the moving web (1) after the rollers (2,6). Their free ends are parallel to the roller axes, to lie slackly on the moving paper web surface.
