COMPUTER IMPLEMENTED SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR EXTRACTING AND RECOGNIZING ALPHANUMERIC CHARACTERS FROM TRAFFIC SIGNS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a computer implemented system and method for extracting and recognizing alphanumeric characters from traffic signs.SOLUTION: A camera present in a system is adapted to be mounted on a vehicle to capture images of traffic signs. The system then defines a region of interest (ROI) within a frame of a captured image. Alphanumeric characters are extracted from the region of interest and enhanced for recognition. In order to recognize the enhanced alphanumeric characters, the image is converted to a binary image and morphological thinning technique is applied on the converted image. A space then obtained between two alphanumeric characters thus helps in extracting the characters and recognizing them independently from the captured image. Each extracted alphanumeric character is re-sized to a specified size and is recognized with the help of white pixels count. Recognized alphanumeric characters are displayed on a display.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
