The device includes a coil spring (8) and at least one clamp (20,21) connected to at least one end of the spring and operable for clamping an optical fibre, or a wire link (5) extending through the spring. Each clamp has a first portion (10,11) which is screw-threaded and which has a number of axially extending resiliently deformable clamping fingers (14). A second portion (9,12) is screw-threaded for engagement with the first portion over the clamping fingers to force them towards one another. A collar (15) of relatively soft force-spreading material is contained between the clamping fingers. The collar is compressed in clamping engagement with the elongate flexible element as the second portion is engaged with the first and the clamping fingers are forced towards one another. A guide can support the elongate flexible element.
