Speed and rotational angle detection system for combustion engine crankshaft

A tone wheel (80) with regularly spaced teeth of a a ferrous material along its periphery is attached to the end of the crankshaft (60). A Hall sensor (46) senses the changes in magnetic field as the teeth on the wheel rotate past it. One set of teeth on the wheel has a spacing larger than that of the others, providing an angular reference point for the rotation of the crankshaft.
