The mechanism drives a clamp (10) whose foot (11a) engages in a T-section groove (7) in a bottom section, on which an item is to be clamped. It moves along the groove between the clamping and free positions. A chain (30) fixed to the foot at one end is inserted in the groove at one end, and is accommodated in a vertical housing (20) running along the bottom section, to which it is secured at the side to complement the groove. Guides (17) in the housing divert the chain through 90 degrees from the groove, and near them is a sprocket (40) on a shaft (78) and engaging with the chain. The sprocket is driven in both directions by a hydraulic ram, whose piston is prevented from turning. A screwed spindle engaging in a nut in the piston is coupled at the other end to the sprocket shaft.
