An information retrieval system which has a transmitting means for outputting image information and image identification information that notifies the type of the image information, a display means for outputting an image in accordance with the image information, a position designating means for designating an arbitrary position in the image outputted by the display means and outputs position information in accordance with the designated position, and a data holding means for holding the data related to the image designated by the position designating means. The data related to the image which is designated by the position designating means are outputted by the display means. As it is not necessary to identify the positions of icons provided in the images for the respective image frames of a dynamic image and, further, it is not necessary to digitize all the images and input them to a computer, information quantity to be managed and maintained can be suppressed.
