A stretching device capable of handling flexibly a wide range of elongated thermoplastic resin materials such as a string, film, band and sheet, comprising a first pressurizing medium tank and a first buffer medium tank on an upstream side and a second pressurizing medium tank and a second buffer tank on a downstream side, all of which sequentially and adjacently disposed in a laterally long stretching tank, a superheated steam supply unit and a stretching tank discharge unit connected to the stretching tank, a pressurizing medium supply unit and a discharge unit connected to the first and second pressurizing medium tanks, and a buffer medium supply unit and a discharge unit connected to the first and second buffer medium tanks, wherein opening members each having an opening drilled approximately along the sectional shape of an elongated material passing therethrough with a slight gap therebetween are disposed, with their centers aligned, at upstream and downstream ports via which tanks are connected with one another to allow pressurized medium to flow in a slight amount into the stretching tank and the first and second buffer medium tanks, and an unstretched material supplied from an upstream port is introduced into the stretching tank into which superheated steam is introduced and which is kept airtight, is stretched and is introduced to the downstream port for extracting, thereby producing an elongated thermoplastic resin material.
