A modified potassium-sodium-lithium niobate based piezoelectric ceramic composition, of formula (I), is new. A novel piezoelectric ceramic composition has the formula (I): (1-n)(K1-x-yNaxLiy)m(Nb1-zTaz)O3.nM1M2O3 (I), where M1 is a divalent metal and M2 is a tetravalent metal. The indices x, y, z, m and n have values of either (i) x = /-0.1, y = <= 0.3, x + y = less than 0.75, z = 0 to 0.3, m = 0.98 to 1.0 and n = 0 to 0.1 exclusive; or (ii) x = <= 0.9, y = 0.02 to 0.3, x + y = /-0.75, z = 0 to 0.3, m = 0.98 to 1.0 and n = greater than 0 to 0.05. Preferred Features: M1 is one or more of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba and M2 is one or more of Ti, Zr, Sn and Hf.
