The cylinder head (10) has a lifting valve (40) per cylinder which in its rest position is found with its plate on a sealing point (21) at the end of a gas exchange channel (12) and is supported by a guide (22). The gas exchange channel leads from an opening on an outer face of the cylinder head to the sealing point of the valve plate. The cylinder head includes a recess opening out into the combustion chamber for accommodating a hard-face insert (15). The insert consists of a valve carrier (20) which has a sealing point for the valve plate, a valve guide, a valve-side part of the gas exchange channel, a lifting valve; and at least one of the following features: one or more valve springs (36), a valve shaft seal (33), component-like valve spring plate (34) and valve wedges (35), needed to transmit the valve spring force, and a device for electromagnetic or hydraulic valve operation.
