Interactive television using an unlimited number of channels and compulsory channel change

A method of allowing a television viewer's channel selection device to provide interactive programming to the viewer so that the viewer is able to interact uniquely with a television programme. The invention facilitates and controls the viewer's switching between channels to exercise their preference in altering the course of the programme, and enhances that process by including compulsory switching at points where it is required for continuity of the programme. It further enables the widest possible use of available bandwidth by allowing switching between any channels without limit. The invention may be included in the viewer's set-top box which connects to a cable or satellite feed or it may be provided in a separate box.
