PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ethylene-based polymer having excellent fluidity, mechanical properties and a wide molecular weight distribution, by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a specific ratio of hydrogen by using a prescribed catalyst. SOLUTION: Ethylene is polymerized by using a catalyst comprising (A) a metallocene complex of the group 4 of the periodic table, (B) an amidine derivative preferably of formula I [M is a transition metal of the group 4 of the periodic table; L is a group of formula II (R<20> and R<21> are each a hydrocarbon or the like; A and B are each an atom of the group 15; D is an atom of the group 14 or the like; R<22> is H, a halogen or the like); Cp is cyclopentadienyl or the like; (m) is 1 or 2; (n) is 1 when (m) is 1 and (n) is 0 when (m) is 2; X<1> and X<2> are each H, a halogen, an organic metalloid or the like] and (C) a compound selected from (i) an organoaluminunoxy compound and (ii) a compound to be reacted with the component A and/or the component B to form an ion pair under conditions of hydrogen/ethylene (molar ratio) of 1×10<-6> to 1×10<-2> to give an ethylene polymer having 0.1-1,000 g/10 minutes HLMFR and 0.880-0.970 g/cm<3> density.
