PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a discharge lamp when it is incompatible with a stabilizer. SOLUTION: A discharge lamp lighting device A is provided with a stable lighting means (stabilizer) 1 of which input ends are connected to both electrodes of an AC power supply, and of which output ends are connected to respective one ends of both the filaments of a discharge lamp La to light stably the discharge lamp La, a preheating means 3 connected between the other ends of the filaments of the discharge lamp La for preheating the filaments, a lamp sort detection means 4 connected between both filaments of the discharge lamp La for detecting the sort of the discharge lamp La, and a control means 2 for controlling the stable lighting means 1 based on result of detection by the lamp sort detection means 4. The lamp sort detection means 4 detects if either of discharge lamps compatible to ratings of the stable lighting means 1, and discharge lamps of similar outer sizes to the discharge lamps but incompatible with the ratings of the stable lighting means 1 is connected to the stable lighting means 1 by utilizing specific characteristics by the sort of the discharge lamp La, such as a lamp voltage, a lamp current, or a filament voltage. |
