PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a bactericide having an excellent bactericidal activity, as a phenyl derivative having an acyl substituted group to which an unsaturated group is bonded or an unsaturated group to which an acyl group is bonded. SOLUTION: This benzyloxy-substituted aromatic compound is expressed by the formula (m) and (n) are each 0 or 1 and (m+n) is 1; X is H, a halogen, a 1-4C alkyl or a 1-4C alkoxy; R is H, a 1-12C alkyl, a 2-12C alkenyl, or the like; R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-12C alkyl, a 3-7C cycloalkyl, or the like, at least one of R1 and R2 is H; R3 is a 1-12C alkyl or a 1-12C haloalkyl) and its optical antipode, a salt and a complex, and e.g. methyl N-methoxy- N-[2- 3-(3'-phenyl-3'-oxo-prop-1'-enyl)phenoxymethyl}phenyl]carbamate is exemplified. The compound of the formula is obtained by, e.g. subjecting a correspondingα,β-unsaturated compound to alkylation with a suitable substituted benzyl bromide.
