The present invention refers to an extension unit for a bidirectional multichannel optical space, consisting in a housing with two sections 20, accommodating inside it a bidirectional amplifier unit 1 consisting of a standardised rack of type ETS 21, having optical amplifiers 11, 11', circulators 10, 10', optical couplers 12, 12', including cards 14 and alarms 14', having in the upper zone a voltage converter 22. Said extension unit for a bidirectional multichannel optical space realises the amplification of the optical signal in a transparent fashion, that is, it amplifies the entire carrier wave spectrum, without the need for electrical regeneration, and [this is done] on interlaced signals, in a single monomode fibre, thereby amplifying the permitted length in the interconnection space between two data processing centres. <IMAGE>
