PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely make it possible to sterilize food poisoning bacteria in a crude refuse treating vessel and to obviate the degradation in crude refuse treatment efficiency. SOLUTION: This crude refuse treating apparatus 8 executes the decomposition treatment of crude refuse by putting the crude refuse into a crude refuse treating vessel 1 packed with a crude refuse treating material. The apparatus has a heating means 2 for elevating the temp. in this crude refuse treating vessel 1, an agitating means 3 for agitating and pulverizing the crude refuse and a discharge means 4 for removing moisture. The apparatus has an ordinary mode for executing the decomposition treatment of the crude refuse by the crude refuse treating material and a sterilization mode for heating the crude refuse to a temp. higher than the set temp. for ordinary heating with the heating means in the ordinary mode in addition to the ordinary decomposition treatment of the crude refuse. The apparatus has a darkness/brightness detecting means for detecting darkness and brightness and has a control section for enabling the sterilization mode when dark and releasing the sterilization mode when bright.
