The matrix printer is contained within a housing (1) and has an ink ribbon (5) passing in front of it between two spools (6). Alternatively fibre ball point-pens can be employed in place of the ink ribbon. The housing can be precisely located over the sheet to be printed by attaching it to a carriage or slide which moves to and fro across the sheet on a rail. This rail can be moved up and down on two further rails located either side of the sheet which is typically rested in a frame. The keyboard can be mounted directly on the housing whereby five keys are provided for single base operation thereby allowing all required symbols to be selected with the use of a 5-bit code.
