A method for marking bread comprises the steps of depositing moisture on a surface of dough for bread, depositing flour or the like on the surface of the dough 36, one or both of the flour or the like and the moisture being deposited in a desired predetermined pattern so that flour is retained by moisture on the dough in a predetermined pattern, and then baking the dough. A stencil 28 is preferably used to deposit the flour in the predetermined pattern. An apparatus (10, Fig 1) with an oven (16, Fig 1) or kit for carrying out the method preferably comprises a proving box (12, Fig 1), means for spraying (18, Fig 3) the moisture on the dough, a stencil 28, flour depositing means 20 including vibrating means 31, conveying means 14, and a sensor 32 with a photocell for sensing the position of the dough on the conveying means. |
