<p>A variable valve timing apparatus is employed in an engine that includes a crankshaft (15), an intake camshaft (22) for driving intake valves (20), an exhaust camshaft (23) for driving exhaust valves (21), and a transmission (15a, 24a, 25a, 26) for transmitting rotation between the crankshaft, the intake camshaft, and the exhaust camshaft. The variable valve timing apparatus varies the valve timing of the intake valves (20) or the exhaust valves (21). A first actuator (24) is incorporated in the transmission to adjust the rotational phase of the intake camshaft (22) or the exhaust camshaft (23) relative to the crankshaft (15). A second actuator (25) is arranged on the intake camshaft (22) or the exhaust camshaft (23) to adjust the valve lift of the associated valves.
