PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic polyamide, capable of preventing the fusion of low-order condensate and smoothly promoting a solid-phase polymerization in the production of the aromatic polyamide through a solid-phase polymerization process. SOLUTION: In producing an aromatic polyamide comprising (A) a dicarboxylic acid component unit consisting essentially of 30-100 mol.% of a terephthalic acid component unit and (B) a diamine unit consisting essentially of 50-100 mol.% of an aliphatic alkylenediamine component unit, (i) a low-order condensate having 0.05-0.2 dL/g intrinsic viscosity [η]1 in a solid state is prepared by the polycondensation reaction between a dicarboxylic acid and a diamine, (ii) the low-order condensate is polymerized in a solid phase at <=195 deg.C to prepare a solid-phase polymer having an intrinsic viscosity [η]2 satisfying the relation [η]2 -[η]1 =0.02-0.1 dL/g and (iii) the solid-phase polymer is further polymerized in a solid phase to prepare an aromatic polyamide having 0.15-1.1 dL/g intrinsic viscosity [η]3 and [η]3 /[η]2 >1.0.
